6 Things Your Photographer Wishes You Knew

When It Comes to Planning a Wedding

Hi all!

Thank you all for checking out the blog, the fact you are here makes my heart smile. Planning a wedding is stressful, that’s a give in. But don’t worry boo! I got you! Together we can do this. This blog will go over 6 tips that I think are extremely helpful while planning your wedding. Let’s dive in! Here are 6 tips that your photographer secretly wants you to know.

1.  Choosing your vendors

Let's talk about vendors and how to choose them. After all, your wedding day is all about you. So, let's keep it that way! I’m sure during the first few months of your engagement you have been getting all the recommendations and great advice! But.... sometimes that can be a little overwhelming. When choosing a vendor make sure it’s because you love their style not because aunt Karen made you hire them... Am I right?!? Want to get my vendors list? Feel free to ask! I have a great group of people that I love working with and know will show up in every way possible on your big day.

2.  Flat lay

Flat lays are one of my favorite parts of a wedding day as a photographer. It is a great way to remember all of the small details of your wedding. Please bring your save the dates/invitations/stamps/envelopes/ and anything that is special for you. You can put together a box of all of these items. That way you can be prepared. Also, please ask your florist to leave a few loose flowers for your flat lay design. This adds another element of your wedding day to the flat lay.

3.   Planning a Seamless Timeline

Timelines make a wedding day run smoothly and on track. Timelines will keep all of your vendors on time. This way everyone will know where to be and won't have to ask you so you can enjoy your big day. When planning out your timeline remember that the more detailed it is the better off you will be on the big day. You will be sending this timeline to all of your vendors so they know when to set up.

When planning your timeline there are a few things to think about. Be aware of the sunset, most photographers will sneak you away for a 20-30 minute couples session. I would like to be at our sunset location 30 minutes before sunset. For example, if the sun sets at 7:30 I would like for us to be there at 7:00. Weddings run late! Don't worry, they all do. On the big day we may have to rearrange a few things. If you are planning for a first look, I recommend leaving at least a 30 minute window. I need at least an hour to do your bridals/bridal party/groomsmen photos after you put on your dress. When it comes to family group photos I will need anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour of time. Depending on your family size. I will also do a 20-30 minute couple session after your family group photos.

4.  What To Splurge On

Let’s chat about a few things that are more important than others. I may be partial to the importance when it comes to documenting your moments. But come on guys! These memories last forever… It is so important to choose the photographer/ videographer that you love. Don’t settle for someone who doesn’t represent you as a couple. Secondly, the right florist can take any ordinary wedding to a spectacular wedding. My best tip for brides is to splurge on bouquets for you and your ladies. You should love your bouquet!

Details! Some of my favorite weddings are those that really show the personality of the couple. I love getting to know you even better through your wedding day style. Make sure that your wedding day is a reflection of you.

5.  Group Shot List

Guys!!! A group shot list will save you! Family portrait time is usually the most stressful part of the day. This is usually the only time I see brides getting frustrated. If we can avoid this why not?!? Family portraits usually come directly after the ceremony right after your guests have seen you for the first time in your stunning white dress. Everyone will want to congratulate you. Trust me there will be time for that! Have your efficient announce that all family will stay and all friends will continue onto cocktail hour where you will join them soon. Here’s a little tip, have your caterer bring over a tray of cocktails and horderves for you and your family to enjoy during family portrait time. This will keep your family happy during photo time. Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of creating a group shot list. Start with immediate family and finish with extended family. It is helpful to list actual names of each family member. By doing this we can call their names as we are ready for them. I typically hand the group shot list to my second shooter or your maid of honor depending on the situation. Try to keep your group number to under 20 groupings. Allow at least 45 minutes for family portraits.

6.  Choosing a Venue

When choosing a venue consider timing and light. Your photographer will love you for doing this! Especially if you want the most top-quality images. For example, when choosing a getting ready space consider somewhere that is light, bright, and airy. Your getting ready space should also be spacious enough for all of your girls and you to get ready in.

When it comes to a ceremony site, it is helpful if it’s a location that has some tree cover. Because ceremonies are usually done during the most harshest light of the day it is important to have shade. Plus, your guests will thank you that they won’t have to be in the direct sun.

Now, for my favorite part of the day. Sunset time! Every photographer has a part of a wedding day where they truly feel like they shine. Sunsets are my absolute favorite light of the day. When it comes to choosing a location for sunset shots I would highly recommend a location that gets the last little bit of light of the day. For example, a hilltop or higher point of the venue. If your venue doesn’t have a hilltop, consider an earlier part of the evening. This way you won’t miss your sunset photos all together.
